IRAN -
Robert de Warren spent eleven fascinating years in Iran, during the reign of the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. He was sent at the shah’s request, by Dame Ninette de Valois, founder of The Royal Ballet in London. He was Ballet-Master/Choreographer for five years and simultaneously researched ethnic, mystic and courtly folkore around the entire country. On his departure after eleven years, he and his wife, Jacqueline, had founded the Iran National Folklore Organization, its College and professional performing company The Mahalli Dancers of Iran, which toured the world as ambassadors of Persian culture. He is the only person to have ever undertaken such a complete and challenging research and documentation, and is, today, the utmost authority on Iranian Folklore Dance and ceremonial.
